We meet them in Stanford, where Art is attending, while Patrick has left education to become a professional tennis player. “I think she’s making me an honest man. You don’t believe me?” “No, I’m just — I’m not sure how she’s thinking about all of this. So we cut to a sort of reverse shot, extreme close up, where Patrick hugs, in a sort of ambiguous way. When the sugar goes on the cheek of Patrick, Art takes it off with his hand in a very nice gesture of kindness — and very intimate, I would say.

“Queen!”It was a Friday night in January, and Snoop Dogg had just rolled into a cocktail party hosted by Donna Langley, NBCUniversal’s chief content officer and studios chairwoman. His shouted greeting, paired with a jaunty deferential dance, seemed to leave her a bit embarrassed. “We’re here to celebrate filmmakers and films,” Langley told the room a few minutes later. Like it or not, this moment in Hollywood history is very much about her. Nolan started his acceptance speech for best director by saying, “Donna Langley — thank you for seeing the potential in this.”

“Hello, I’m Justine Triet, and I’m the co-writer and the director of ‘Anatomy of a Fall.’” “You took the book’s best idea. Even when it comes to language, I am the one meeting you on your turf. We needed to deliver a certain amount of information and to get to know the character of the dead husband. Often, very dramatic intimate scenes are used to be filmed at night, as if intimacy were separate from the rest of life. I know you know I’m right.

So everything you’re going to see in this scene was shot simultaneously with 10 cameras. The cameras just shot those women in the kitchen, is running simultaneously with the cameras in here shooting this girl. She’s really fantastic. No film lights are used in the film, and it’s all shot simultaneously. These guys in this scene are two senior engineers from a crematorium firm called Topf & Sons, who built and supplied crematorium to the various concentration camps.” - [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] “The tone of this scene really is as if they’re selling air conditioning units.

He gets up, he turns in circles, the camera circles around him, and as that’s happening, other figures are coming into frame from left and right. And as he pivots around and tries to explain that his wife is sick, which is an understatement, the camera keeps tracking around. “My wife, she’s real sick!” That was one of the most enjoyable moments, laying out that shot. Not boring images, but boring, really focused on them. “I need to sit down.” “Yes, you do, but you’re standing.” That’s when he really has lost his senses and he’s really, really tired.

The driver is Jean Behra, played by Derek Hill, whose father, by the way, Phil Hill, was first American Formula One world champion. We see stopwatches, because within the church, you can hear the gunshot because the Autodromo is so close. And of course, the Maserati does break the Ferrari record. The metaphysical, the savage power is really what is wedded together as a value in the scene. So truly, the scene is operating on about two or three different levels all at the same time.

In “Anatomy of a Scene,” we ask directors to reveal the secrets that go into making key scenes in their movies. You can also watch our collection of more than 150 videos on YouTube and subscribe to our YouTube channel. It’s time to come clean in this sequence from “The Holdovers,” a comedy set in 1970 during the holiday break at an all-boys boarding school. At one point, the two leave campus for a trip to Boston where Paul runs into, and lies to, an old college acquaintance. Angus confronts his teacher about the lie in this scene in a liquor store that plays out primarily in one take.

And I’m the director of ‘Bottoms.’ [MUSIC PLAYING] So in this scene, PJ, who is played by Rachel Sennott, and Josie, who is played by Ayo Edebiri, are about to walk into their first Fight Club meeting. Just punch me.” “Punch you?” “Yeah, come on.” “I can punch you?” “Yeah, I know how to take a punch. Something people would always say, ‘PJ knows how to take a punch.’ Come on up.

And I thought it would be great, the idea of watching Ethan Hunt and Tom Cruise driving in a car like that. Something to watch during this sequence is the behavior between Tom Cruise and Haley Atwell. The Fiat is a very difficult car to drive. We were allowed to shoot at the Spanish Steps with the understanding that we never could actually physically touch the Spanish Steps. But so long as we never touched the Spanish Steps, we could do whatever we want.

And then there’s the signature zero-G stall right after that. It really comes down to speed, because our goal is to be at zero-G throughout that entire stall. So you’re not sitting in your seat, and you’re not hanging on the lap bar. You’re just floating like an astronaut, is the feeling you’re going for. “I’m Andy Muschietti, and I’m the director of ‘The Flash.’ O.K., so this is part of the opening of the movie. He gets a call from Alfred to come to Gotham, because he needs to assist Batman.” “Alfred. But in most scenes that you see Barry, it’s Ezra performing it with, of course, a set extension that is digital. So Ezra was hanging on wires during a lot of days to basically bring this scene to life, with that nurse hanging on wires. And no baby was harmed in the production of this scene, and voila.” [BABIES CRYING] [WOMAN SCREAMING]

A woman made of fire falls for a man made of water. The filmmakers behind the new Disney/Pixar movie “Elemental” knew the story they wanted to tell. They encountered plenty of challenges and took a few wrong turns as they worked on this romance-adventure that anthropomorphizes earth, air, fire and water. “Like these families of copper living next to helium, but don’t trust them because they’re gassy,” he said. Below is a closer look at what went into developing the visual style for each element.

What makes for a strong New York movie? The standouts are often, like the city itself, unpredictable, a little shabby around the edges, sometimes exasperating but always compelling. The Tribeca Festival, which runs Wednesday to June 18, has loved this kind of work since its beginnings and has made it a point to celebrate the films set right in its backyard. This year will feature one such movie made by one of the festival’s founders. The film shows a reverence for the neighborhood in which much of it takes place, and Mr. De Niro brings a knowing eye to the material.

So right about here, as the turtles start to move, then you see, O.K., there’s a little bit of dance starting to happen. And I took a page out of Walt Disney’s playbook, and I worked with the Alvin Ailey Company. He had worked with the Ballet Russe Company when he created ‘Fantasia.’ And I thought that was such a brilliant idea. And then we found all these sea creatures that actually lent themselves to dance naturally. These are all real sea creatures.
